Greetings,

Join us for a Clean Energy and Wild Salmon Rally and Public Hearing!

We need your support on October 14th to advocate for a Bright Future with clean energy AND wild salmon!

The Northwest Power and Conservation Council (the region's official power planning body) has drafted its latest power and conservation plan for the Pacific Northwest, and is hosting hearings around the region to gather public input. The plan assesses the region's long-term electricity needs and proposes a mix of resources to meet them.

WHAT: Sixth Regional Power Plan Public Hearing (And Rally!)

WHEN: Wed, Oct. 14th at 6pm

HEARING LOCATION:
EcoTrust Building Conference Center 721 NW 9th Avenue Portland, Oregon

RALLY - 5:30pm: Learn from special guest speakers why this plan is significant, what the Power Council does, and how you can influence the plan. (Same location)

WE NEED YOUR HELP TO SEND A STRONG MESSAGE THAT OREGON SUPPORTS WILD SALMON AND CLEAN ENERGY!

To RSVP, please contact Bobby at 541.359.4818 / bobby@wildsalmon.org

Here are FOUR BIG REASONS why you need to come to demonstrate your support for wild salmon and clean energy.

#1: CRITICAL ENERGY AND SALMON DECISIONS - As you know, the future of wild salmon and our regional energy supply are tightly linked. The final 6th Power and Conservation Plan will map out a regional strategy to guide how we use and generate power in the future. Think coal vs. energy efficiency and renewables, for example. Think global warming. Think dams, rivers, and salmon. Important decisions will be made on this plan that connect directly to these important issues. You can help us make a big difference by attending these hearings!

#2: CLEAN ENERGY AND SALMON! - In contrast to past regional power plans, we need to ensure that the 6th Plan strongly moves our region toward properly balancing our region's energy needs with our salmon and wildlife needs. For years, the Northwest states (WA, OR, ID, MT) have sacrificed the needs of salmon and fishing-dependent communities to those of energy and dams. We need your help to demonstrate strong public support for a new plan that strikes a far better balance between meeting our energy needs and the needs of fish and wildlife.

#3: A 'BRIGHT FUTURE' MEANS LESS COAL & MORE SALMON - In preparation for the 6th Plan, Council staff completed several studies that supported the findings of our Bright Future Report from earlier this year. These analyses confirm that we can affordably shut down regional coal plants, start electrifying transportation, restore endangered salmon with options like lower Snake River dam removal, invest in conservation and renewables to meet our energy demands, and create new good jobs in the process. WE NEED YOU AND OTHERS to attend this Portland hearing in order to demonstrate strong public support for these types of energy and salmon policies, and to ask the Council to include these reports in the final version of the 6th Power and Conservation Plan.

#4: YES TO CONSERVATION AND RENEWABLES - This draft 6th Plan proposes to meet all the region's new electricity needs over the next 20 years with investments in conservation and renewables. Though we need to do even more (see points 1-3), this part of the proposal marks an historic first for the Council and is very good news for the region's people and our salmon. Once again, we need you and your friends at the hearing to help us demonstrate strong public support to ensure these proposals end up in the final 6th Northwest Power and Conservation Plan.

Four good reasons to come. Plus one more - the Portland hearing will last just 2 hours.

If you have further questions about the hearings, the 6th Power Plan, or about providing written or oral testimony at the hearing, please contact me ASAP. I am happy to help.
