Editor's Note:

Most nonprofits have been tightening budgets across the board. While some sector conferences have experienced double-digit declines in attendance, others have sold out with people scrambling on the wait list.

We want to hear from you. What makes a conference hot or not? Are your conference choices made by budget constraints or are some conference topics no longer appealing?

Please take a minute to fill out this survey - and feel free to forward it to friends and colleagues in the sector. As always, thank you for your participation.

TV Programming To Spotlight Volunteering And Service

Celebrity star power will be on hand at the nation’s largest conference on volunteerism to detail plans for a new multi-year campaign to help make public service a national priority.

As reported exclusively on www.nptimes.com this past Tuesday (June 16), the centerpiece of the Entertainment Industry Foundation’s (EIF) push will be to include national service into programming by the major television networks this fall. ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox have all agreed to write service into the fall programs, multiple sources told The NonProfit Times.

7 relevant factors with UPMIFA

Appropriate? Accumulate? What is an organization to do with those funds?

Speaking at the AICPA Not-For-Profit Financial Executive Forum in Anaheim, Gary McGee, CPA explained the Uniform Prudent Management of Institutional Funds Act (UPMIFA), is law in 25 states and has been proposed in eight others.

Uniform Law Commission passed UPMIFA in 2006. It replaced the 1972 UMIFA, which has been considered a success but has portions that are considered to be out of date. The new act establishes a more sound and unified basis for charitable fund management. It is intended to address prudent investing and endowment spending.

McGee said that, in making a determination to appropriate or accumulate, an institution is expected to act in good faith, with the care that an ordinarily prudent person in a like position would exercise under similar circumstances, and consider, if relevant, the following seven factors:

  • The duration and preservation of the endowment fund.
  • The purposes of the institution and the endowment fund.
  • General economic conditions.
  • The possible effect of inflation or deflation.
  • The expected total return from income and the appreciation of investments.
  • Other resources of the institution.
  • The investment policy of the institution.

Beating back 10 career roadblocks

There might be many roadblocks in your path to success, according to James Weinberg, founder and CEO of Boston-based Commongood Careers. But identifying those roadblocks can help you plan an alternate route -- or blast away obstacles in your path, according to Weinberg during NTEN’s 2009 Nonprofit Technology Conference.

Here are some common obstacles you may find:

  • Planning. You need to identify your goals.
  • Confidence. You know those goals you just made? Triple it, according to Weinberg. It’s still possible.
  • Skills. You can acquire skills by education or learn by experience.
  • Experience. This can be done on-the-job or outside of work.
  • Family. Your job shouldn’t be your whole life. Strike a balance that works for you.
  • Boss. Tell your boss if you don’t feel you are being cultivated as an employee. If that doesn’t work, try to find another job. It will be the boss’s loss in the long run.
  • Money. Education is expensive.
  • Networks. Look for quality and quantity. Networks will help you get where you need to be.
  • Resolve. Try to keep advancing but stay flexible, according to Weinberg.
  • Other. Analyze what you think is holding you back.

5 tips for Form 990 conflict compliance

It would take most of the day to enumerate all of the parts of the revamped Form 990 issued by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) -- and anyone who tried to read them would have a nervous breakdown before getting to the end anyway.

Probably the most important features to remember about the new 990 are that it is here to stay and it covers an extremely wide range of areas.

Catherine Oetgen and Sarah Siegel, associates in the law firm Perlman and Perlman, LLP in New York, caution that one possibly overlooked area in the new 990 is that of conflict of interest.

Many problems can now incur much stiffer penalties. Authorities can impose financial sanctions, remove directors (in extreme cases the entire board) or seek criminal penalties.

With that in mind, Oetgen and Siegel offer their five tips for conflict compliance. They are:

  • Adopt a comprehensive conflict of interest policy.
  • Annually distribute disclosure questionnaires to directors, officers and key employees.
  • Create a conflict decision tree to address conflict scenarios before they arise.
  • Educate the board and staff on the importance of conflict disclosure.
  • Review the conflict policy periodically to make sure it continues to meet the organization’s needs.
