Step Back and Examine
Your Resume
Imagine that you are a recruiter. You place
an ad with a very explicit description of the position you are
trying to fill. Immediately, you begin to get resumes. Hundreds,
if not thousands of resumes pour in for this one position. You
want the very best person for the job so you might copy and
paste the contents of the resumes into a database and search for
matches to the profile information that you have for the
position. That would be a great way to weed out those candidates
that don’t really match all of the attributes from your
description. Though you may picture a recruiter reading over all
of the resumes submitted, many recruiters use “resume
matching software” to simplify the process of reading all
of those boring resumes. What does that mean to you? Well, if
you haven’t been getting calls for jobs that seem like
they are perfect for you, then it just may be that your resume
was never really read by a human being. You might not be making
it past the resume matching software.
So how do you get your resume to be looked
at for your terrific skills, especially in this tough economy?
Start by looking carefully at the job description for specific
descriptions of skills. If you possess those skills, then match
the description on your resume to the job description as closely
as possible. The more matches you possess to that job
description, the more likely that the resume matching software
will find you as a match.
Of course this matching is only the first
step to getting that all important interview. Long gone are the
days when your resume was just a list of jobs that you have done
in the past. When the recruiter finally gets down to reading the
fifty or so selected candidates' resumes, your resume better not
put them to sleep. Top recruiters say that you only have about
20 seconds to hook them. If you don’t sound interesting,
you may end up at the bottom of the
heap.

Begin with a professional profile that is a
short paragraph about you. Use power words that draw attention
to all the things you have accomplished throughout your work
history (words like: developed, facilitated, managed, organized,
and so on). Next, add in a bulleted list of marketable skills
that you possess. About 75% of people’s resumes still use
the indented, basic style resume; so if you want to stand out,
change the format.
You don’t have to list everything you
have done. Tell the recruiter about the exciting things you have
done and be sure to include measureable, positive outcomes.
Remember that this is like a commercial about YOU. Help those
recruiters to see all of the positive skills that you possess
and you will start to get those all important
interviews.
Go online and type in “great
resumes”. You can quickly get an idea from reading some
sample resumes of ideas that you can use to make yours stand
out. There has never been a more important time for you to think
like a marketer. Go out and get that job that you want! As
always, good luck and happy hunting!
