The Bureau of Labor Statistics

There has never been a greater need for information about jobs and careers in America. With unemployment still on the rise it is important for those seeking employment to be armed with the very best information available. The Occupational Outlook Handbook, published by The Bureau of Labor Statistics, is a nationally recognized source of career information, designed to assist you in making decisions about your future and your career aspirations. The Handbook is revised every two years and is now available. In their Occupational Handbook 2008-2009 Edition, they advise:,

“Directly contacting employers is one of the most successful means of job hunting. Through library and Internet research, develop a list of potential employers in your desired career field. Then call these employers and check their Web sites for job openings. Web sites and business directories can tell you how to apply for a position or whom to contact. Even if no open positions are posted, do not hesitate to contact the employer. You never know when a job might become available. Consider asking for an informational interview with people working in the career you want to learn more about. Ask them how they got started, what they like and dislike about the work, what type of qualifications are necessary for the job, and what type of personality succeeds in that position. In addition to giving you career information, they may be able to put you in contact with other people who might hire you, and they can keep you in mind if a position opens up.”

This is terrific advice. Though the Handbook provides information for occupations on a national level, each state has individually detailed information on occupations and labor markets. For a listing of each state, go to http://www.bls.gov/oco/oco20024.htm. You can find out what industries are popular in your state and begin to plan your next move.

The Bureau also has the most up-to-date economic information at http://www.bls.gov/bls/newsrels.htm#latest-releases. Monthly layoff statistics and the latest on the employment situation are available here, giving you a better idea of what to expect in your area. In fact, the current labor report shows that the Education/Health services actually grew over the last five months, meaning that they are hiring in that sector.e

Give yourself a leg-up on the competition by planning your job hunt carefully and be sure to try multiple avenues to help you to achieve success. Above all, stay optimistic.
