NPT Jobs: Crafting a Career in
the Nonprofit
Sector
There are many reasons that people decide on
a career direction. Certainly money, convenience and aptitude
are strong factors in making this important decision. However, I
can recall my grandfather’s words of wisdom, “do
what makes you happy and work becomes play”. When you are
happy doing your job it has been proven that you are more
productive. According to Alexander Kjerulf, author of the book
Happy Hour is 9 to 5, a practical guide to making
yourself and others happy at work, “loving what you do is
the most important factor in being productive.”
Perhaps my old Grandad was right!
How do you know what you will be happy doing?
There are career tests that you can take that will assess what
types of careers will best suit you and your interests.
The company Live Career offers an opportunity to take a free
career test. These types of tests originated during World War II
with the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) that was designed to
psychologically profile preferences in how people perceive the
world and make decisions.
Katharine Cook Briggs and her daughter,
Isabel Briggs Myers, developed the test to help women who were
entering the industrial workforce to figure out what types of
jobs they would be most comfortable doing. The MBTI grew into
one of the most popular career tests that studies normal
populations emphasizing the value of naturally occurring
differences among people.

Last year on
Memorial Day weekend I attended a party at my friend
Daphne’s home in Morristown, New Jersey. She lives on
Washington Valley Road near the old historic section of
Morristown where George Washington had his headquarters. It was
a beautiful day and we were sitting outside in lawn chairs when
a couple arrived at the party with the most adorable, well
mannered German Shepherd puppy. It turned out that they were
volunteers for The Seeing Eye Puppy-Raising Program
sponsored by The Seeing Eye,® Inc., the oldest
existing dog guide school in the world.
Prior to a dog
beginning training as a seeing-eye dog for the blind, it spends
its time with a “foster family,” who give the dog
love, gentle guidance, and consistent care. The couple seemed to
be extremely happy. The husband would take the puppy with him to
work each day. He worked for a cable company and was able to be
with the dog all day every day. The wife was employed by The
Seeing Eye, Inc., just up the road from my friend Daphne. These
people spoke of how much they loved their work knowing that the
puppies they raised would end up going to blind people.
There is no salary
that can make up for the satisfaction brought to those who serve
others and who are happily engaged in working for a good cause.
The benefits of this type of work can be extraordinary. If you
are the type of person who wants to be happy, there are hundreds
of great causes that could use your help. You can craft a career
that will bring you great happiness. The journey can begin by
understanding yourself and then finding a cause that suits you.
Good luck and happy hunting.
