Lifting the Syringe Exchange Funding Ban

Greetings,

From early on in the HIV/AIDS epidemic, syringe exchange
programs have helped prevent new infections. The rates of HIV in
injection drug users in Washington state is dramatically lower
than the national average.

This summer, the House of Representatives took a historic step
by removing the ban on federal funding for needle and syringe
exchange programs.

Public health advocates, the Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention, law enforcement agencies, mayors and service
providers applauded this step to stand up for evidence-based
public health practices.

But the Senate has not taken any action and the fate of syringe
exchange will be decided in conference later this month.

We are asking you to help us contact President Obama for his
help in this action. He made the campaign promise to lift this
ban, and we want to let him know that he can help.

Dear [decision maker name automatically inserted here],

by removing the ban on federal funding for needle and syringe

Senators need to hear from you Mr. President! They need to hear
that your administration supports syringe exchange. Now is the
time to fulfill your campaign promise to end the ban on federal
funding of syringe exchange.

----END OF LETTER TO BE SENT----

Sincerely,
[Your Name]
