Thank Your Member of the Assembly for Advancing the Healthy Teens Act
The New York State Assembly passed the Healthy Teens Act for the third year in a row! This important legislation was approved with overwhelming bi-partisan support by a vote of 130-11.
The Healthy Teens Act would create a grant program to support school and community efforts to implement age-appropriate, medically accurate sex education programs. This program is vitally important in statewide efforts to educate young people to make healthy decisions and to prevent unintended pregnancy and the spread of sexually transmitted infections.
Please take a moment to thank your member of the Assembly for his or her vote in support of the Healthy Teens Act.

Nearly 40,000 teens will become pregnant in New York State this year.
Young people are at greatest risk for unintend pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections. In fact, the highest rates of gonorrhea are among young people ages 15-24.
The Healthy Teens Act (A.2856 / S.1342) establishes a competitive grant program through the NYS Department of Health for the specific purpose of awarding grants to school districts, boards of cooperative educational services (BOCES),school-based health centers and community-based organizations for age-appropriate sex education programs.
Specifically, the bill would support schools and communities in providing age-appropriate, medically accurate sex education that includes information about how to abstain from sexual activity as well as information about contraception and disease prevention.
