Newly proposed bipartisan legislation in Washington would offer Maine households an escape from high gas prices by expanding funding for public transit and encouraging insurance companies and mortgage providers to provide incentives for households that drive less.
By providing affordable in-town housing and transportation choices, this bill would provide the financial and regulatory framework to help the American Dream survive and thrive in the 21st century.

Subject: Please Cosponsor HR 6495, Transportation and Housing Options for Gas Price Relief Act of 2008
Dear [ Decision Maker ] ,
I recently learned about Rep. Earl Blumenauer's Transportation and Housing Options for Gas Price Relief Act of 2008 (HR 6495), and I urge you to sign on as a co-sponsor of this important bill.
As you know, gas prices are a top concern in your home state. This is a chance for Congress to provide immediate relief with new transit services and more in-town, energy-efficient housing.
This bill would provide the financial and regulatory framework for a sustainable, 21st century American Dream: affordable in-town housing with location-efficient mortgages, new funding for transit, and auto insurance benefits for people who drive less.
I hope that we'll see your name listed as a cosponsor of this worthy bill very soon.
Sincerely,
|

Every year, Mainers are losing billions of dollars in disposable income down the gas tank thanks to rising oil prices.
Because supply-side solutions like offshore drilling are still at least a decade away from providing more energy, Congress needs to relieve prices NOW by investing in better transportation choices and opening up market-based incentives for households that drive less.
The bipartisan Transportation and Housing Options for Gas Price Relief Act of 2008 (H.R. 6495) would pay for expanded public transportation and help transit agencies deal with high fuel prices.
This bill would also free up banking and insurance markets to reward households that save gas and money by living in town. "Location Efficient Mortgages" would make owning a home in service-center communities more affordable and reduce the risk of another housing market collapse. And "pay as you drive" auto insurance would reward occasional drivers with lower rates.
Overall, this legislation will save Americans gas money, reduce our dependence on foreign oil, alleviate traffic, and reduce pollution.
