Dealing with images is no easy task for 99% of the population.
Check out http://www.fixpicture.org/
It's free and will help get a handle on resizing images to use in your website.
Smaller is better.
Stop squeezing that 1430px sq. 780k image into a 150 px square. It looks horrible and slows the page load down. ------------------ Marc Trimble

If you are running Windows XP, you can download the resize picture tool from Microsoft for free. While it doesn't have as many of the options as some other tools, it does an adequate job of resizing one picture or multiple pictures. It has options for the more common sizes as well as the ability to do custom sizes. ------------------

I found this small free tool to drop photos on to get them resized. The output size is determined by the name of the executable
quote: The size of output pictures is controlled by the name of the application. To generate 200 pixels images, simply rename the application to PhotoResize200.exe

Also try www.picnik.com. Their free picture editing tools allow you to resize, crop and do basic editing on the web, and then download the result to your desktop. ------------------

Don't forget about The GIMP (www.gimp.org).
quote: GIMP is the GNU Image Manipulation Program. It is a freely distributed piece of software for such tasks as photo retouching, image composition and image authoring. It works on many operating systems, in many languages.
It's fairly easy to use, free, and useful for resizing, retouching, manipulating, and changing file formats. ------------------ Matthew Smith-Soley

I'm glad someone brought up the GIMP. It's a fantastic alternative to pricey Photoshop. My photo managment/editing arsenal consists of: the GIMP, Google's Picasa (great for categorizing and viewing), and FastStone Photo Resizer (it does more than bulk resizing--rename, reorient, resize, etc.)
I have found these (completely free, by the way) tools indispensable in working with my organization's marketing and web. ------------------
