The short explanation of this alert was:
The AIDS epidemic is the greatest health crisis the international community has faced. Since the first case of AIDS was identified in 1981, the disease has claimed the lives of more than 20 million people around the world. Beyond the individual lives that are lost, the epidemic plunges families and countries alike into acute crises and threatens to undo decades of positive gains in life expectancy, poverty reduction, and education.
The international community has responded by tripling global AIDS spending since 2001, however, rates of infection continue to rise, particularly in areas of sub-Saharan African, Eastern Europe, and Asia. More needs to be done now.
Please write the President and your Congressional representatives to increase support for the Global Fund, an international fund that coordinates treatment and prevention programs around the world. Its current work will extend the lives of 1.6 milliion people living with AIDS and will prevent countless more cases.
* Figures are drawn from the AIDS Epidemic Update 2004 and the 2004 AIDS Epidemic Report.
