Help Elephants at St. Louis Zoo

Elephants at the St. Louis Zoo are needlessly suffering and dying prematurely. The Zoo does not provide the space, climate or natural conditions that elephants need, nor do they have room to expand. Please "take action" and write to Mayor Francis Slay and ask him to act to help the elephants at St. Louis Zoo (the Zoo is supported by city and county taxpayer funds). Also, tell friends and family about this important issue.

As a citizen and taxpayer, I am deeply concerned about the welfare of the elephants housed at St. Louis Zoo and I am asking you to intervene on their behalf.

The St. Louis Zoo is just too small for elephants and does not provide an appropriate climate or the natural conditions elephants need. Therefore, the elephants are needlessly suffering and dying prematurely.

Lack of space and inadequate zoo conditions cause arthritis and often-fatal foot disorders, problems that have been evident at the St. Louis Zoo. Most recently, an elephant named Clara was euthanized after becoming crippled with severe arthritis and chronic foot infections.

While wild elephants can walk ten miles a day or more, St. Louis Zoo confines elephants to tiny yards of a half-acre or less. The elephants are relegated to even smaller quarters overnight and during the cold winter months, where they are forced to stand on concrete, a surface that is highly injurious to their feet and joints.

The City of St. Louis Zoo has a responsibility to ensure that the elephants at St. Louis Zoo are kept in an environment that is conducive to their health and well-being. Since the Zoo cannot provide the space and conditions elephants require and elephants are suffering and dying because of it. I urge you to take immediate action to send the elephants to a spacious, natural-habitat sanctuary that is able to meet their complex needs.
