On Sunday, September 7, Jonathan Nicholas of The Oregonian newspaper wrote a great editorial entitled "The Elephant In The Room," about the Oregon Zoo and, more specifically, the elephants.
Taxpayers in the Portland Metro Region will be asked in November to vote on a costly zoo bond measure that would expend millions for an expansion of the elephant exhibit at the Oregon Zoo, but not make a meaningful difference for the elephants. An important point is that the zoo continues to embrace the "free contact" method of training and managing elephants, i.e., use of the cruel bullhook.
