If you would like to learn more about ways you can take action, please visit Inactive -- iAbolish Freedom Action Network. The short explanation of this alert was: The enslavement of black Africans in Mauritania goes back 1,000 years - and has never ended. Captured in slave raids (like those happening today in Sudan), blacks became chattel slaves of their Arab-Berber masters. Centuries later, slaves remain the inherited property of their masters. Since its founding in 1995, SOS Slaves - a Mauritanian anti-slavery group led by former slaves and former masters - is struggling to end this system of slavery. Though banned by the Mauritanian dictatorship (dominated by the Arab minority), SOS Slaves sends rescue missions across the country. But on Sunday (March 13), three SOS Slaves volunteers who helped an escaped slave were arrested by the Mauritanian security forces. Take a minute to demand the release of these brave abolitionists. They are depending on outside support to secure their release. Send the letter below to Mauritanian and American political leaders - and urge your friends to do the same.
