The short explanation of this alert was:
The Commonwealth of Massachusetts has an endowment fund with billions of dollars invested in multinational corporations. $1.4 billion of this endowment is invested in companies doing business with the government of Sudan. This means that the state's money (your tax dollars) are enabling the Sudanese dictatorship to purchase weapons and continue a military campaign that both Congress and the State Department call "genocide".
State Senator Andrea Nuciforo has introduced a bill (co-sponsored by other members of the state legislature) to divest the state's holdings in companies that conduct business in Sudan. We want to make sure that this bill becomes law so that Sudan cannot use our tax dollars to finance genocide, and we want to tell the Sudanese regime that the killing and slave raids must stop now.
Sign the petition below to join us in calling on the state to divest from Sudan until the genocide stops. For more information, contact the American Anti-Slavery Group or visit SudanActivism.com or DivestSudan.org.
