Tell Your Senators and Representative To Support Increased funding for LWCF State Assistance

Many of the FY 2009 Appropriations Bills are being determined by congressional committees.   Take action and tell your Senator  and Representative to support LWCF state assistance at $125 million.

The LWCF state assistance program is a 50/50 matching grant program that helps states and local communities develop community recreation resources like soccer fields, tennis courts, trails, and facilities, watershed parks, and regional parks.  This program is funded through Interior Appropriations and administered to states by the National Park Service.

The federal funds have been a catalyst to assist in project development, which have brought to life many recreation resources that would never exist without matching federal investment.  Localities are responsible for all the management, maintenaince, and programming of these recreation resources in perpetuity.

Ask your Senators and Representative to support $125 million for LWCF state assistance for FY 2009. Your legislators can influence these decisions.

Please write a message below and it will be delivered to your Senators and Representative.  Tell your own story and place a title in the subject line. Congressional staff ignore form letters.  Please give in district and state accounts of how your community has benefited from the LWCF state assistance program.  Go to the following link to see what public recreation resources in your community have received LWCF state assistance:  http://waso-lwcf.ncrc.nps.gov/public/index.cfm .  Also, use the following key points to assist you in writing your letter and subject line below.

Talking Points

  • Please save the program and fund the Land and Water Conservation Fund state assistance at $125 million.
  • The LWCF state/local program matches funds 50/50 to assist parks and recreation infrastructure development and the creation of new public parks.  These funds help to develop sports fields, neighborhood parks, and community gathering places.
  • There is no other program that provides the permanent conservation and outdoor recreation benefits that LWCF does.
  • LWCF serves a vital national need, the need to get the American public active and healthy, which they can best do by recreating in close to home parks aided by the LWCF.
  • In the more than 40 year life of the LWCF, over 41,000 local and state projects have been completed.  Almost all these recreation resources are still in existence today.
