Letters to the Editor

Public attention has rightly seized on the plight of polar bears in a warming world, as their sea ice homes melt beneath their feet. But climate change's threats to plants and animals extend far beyond the polar bear and far beyond the Arctic, and can be found even in your backyard.

Sending a letter to the editor of your local paper is a great way to spread the word about the growing threat to wildlife from global warming. Our website gives you a simple and effective way to write and submit your letter. Just follow the steps below, and please let us know if you see it in print!

This is a chance for you to get personal — let editors know why this issue is so important to you, and why others in your region should care. Here are some hints on how to make your letter compelling:

  • If possible, refer to something mentioned in the paper recently (include the date and title)
  • Keep it short, polite, and to the point (under 150 words is best)
  • Proofread your letter carefully
  • Don’t be discouraged if your letter isn’t published. Even unpublished letters can encourage a paper to pay more attention to the issue. Every effort counts!

NEW: Congratulations to supporter Alyssa H., who had her letter published in the Del Mar Times! Another great letter--let's keep them coming! Thanks also to Terri M. for getting her letter published in the Chicago Tribune, and for all the rest of you who wrote to your local paper.
