The short explanation of this alert was:

UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan

Ten years after the Rwandan genocide, the United Nations and Kofi Annan are again complacent in the face of genocide. The UN Secretary-General has failed to stand up to the Arab-dominated Government of Sudan as it leads a campaign of ethnic cleansing against African Muslim tribes in Darfur.

In 1994, Kofi Annan was Under Secretary-General for Peace Keeping Operations. He received credible information from UN forces in Rwanda about an impending extermination of Tutsi people, but failed to intervene. The result: 800,000 dead and two million refugees. The next year, 7,000 Bosnian Muslims were slaughtered in Sebrenica – a UN safe haven – while UN troops looked on.

In 1997, Annan became Secretary-General. Throughout his term the Government of Sudan has committed what Congress calls acts of "genocide". This year alone in Darfur (Western Sudan), Sudanese forces have displaced one million African Muslims, killing and abducting tens of thousands more. Women and children are ritually gang-raped and enslaved. UN officials have called the situation in Darfur "war crimes", "reign of terror" and "ethnic cleansing." So far Annan has refused to repeat publicly these charges.

On June 10, he delivered the commencement address at Harvard University's graduation ceremony. A diverse coalition of American human rights activists and Sudanese survivors of genocide gathered to protest Annan's complacency. (Learn more about the rally) While the rally was an wonderful success, our struggle must continue until the genocide ends and Darfur's people can return to their homes.  Please sign our petition to further this mission.
