Help Ban Deadly Poisons Used on Animals

H.R. 4775 is a federal bill that would ban Compound 1080 and M-44 sodium cyanide devices, two of the most lethal poisons used to kill native predators. The Environmental Protection Agency has classified both 1080 and M-44s as Category 1 toxicants, the highest level of acute toxicity, making their use not only cruel but ecologically hazardous as well. As a constituent and a voter, I respectfully urge that you become a co-sponsor of H.R. 4775, the Compound 1080 and M-44 Elimination Act. This important bill would ban the two most lethal and ecologically-hazardous poisons used to kill native predators, considered "pests" by some ranchers.

The Environmental Protection Agency has classified both Compound 1080 (sodium fluoroacetate) and M-44 sodium cyanide devices as Category 1 toxicants, the highest level of acute toxicity. "Livestock protection collars" are fitted with pouches containing 1080, which release the poison when punctured. Government agents set baited M-44 devices on public and private lands that eject sodium cyanide when activated. In addition to killing 12 to 15 thousand native predators including coyotes, wolves and foxes each year, these poisons indiscriminately kill or seriously injure unknown numbers of threatened and endangered species, companion animals, even humans -- all at taxpayer expense.

Furthermore, the FBI has listed both Compound 1080 -- which is odorless, tasteless, colorless and has no antidote -- and M-44 capsules as Category 1 toxins with the potential to be used by terrorists for malicious intent.

Use of these insidious poisons is inhumane, dangerous, and ineffective, especially considering that non-lethal methods -- such as proper fencing, night penning and shepherds -- can keep animals on farms safe. H.R. 4775 will prevent countless animals from needlessly dying in excruciating pain, and protect people and the environment as well. Please support this bill by becoming a co-sponsor.
