Subject:
Please support civil unions / House Bill 1826

Dear [ Decision Maker ],

As a constituent, I am writing to urge you to support fairness and equality for all families in our district by voting for House Bill 1826, the Illinois Religious Freedom Protection and Civil Union Act. Civil unions would allow opposite-sex, same-sex and senior couples to enjoy basic, yet critical, legal protections and responsibilities.

Providing legal protections for opposite-sex, same-sex and senior couples in long-term, committed relationships will allow them to legally face crises together, as a family.

Civil unions will allow committed couples to make important decisions about emergency health care and the disposition of a loved one's remains. It will give them the ability to share a room in a nursing home and visit a loved one in the hospital. It will ensure that pensions are not stripped away from those who need and deserve them.

Committed couples - whether opposite-sex, same-sex or seniors - should have the ability to make critical medical decisions or care for their partner. They should not be treated as strangers in the eyes of the law.

Civil Unions follow the precedent of over 270 of the Fortune 500 companies, our biggest employers, who already offer domestic partner benefits to their employees, as do Illinois towns from Champaign to Chicago.

Recognizing civil unions will ensure equal access to basic rights for all citizens, while protecting the freedom of religious institutions. Please vote for House Bill 1826 to ensure that all families in Illinois have the basic legal protections that allow them to deal with moments of crisis. I look forward to your response.

Sincerely,
