On Wednesday, March 18, the MAPE and the Governor's staff began the 2009 contract negotiations. The State negotiators proposed 24 days of furloughs in each of the next two years. Almost five weeks of unpaid leave, with total discretion as to whom, when, and how long left to management.
Push Week is now underway. The MAPE Contract Negotiations Team will work hard during five long days of give-and-take with the Governor's team in order to ensure state workers continue to provide Minnesota families with vital services when they are most needed.
This week, we need to let the Governor know that by forcing furloughs on MAPE members, he is forcing a 10% cut in essential services that protect struggling middle-class families in Minnesota.

- Emails and voice mail messages to the Governor rarely illicit a response. However, phone calls made between 8 am and 4:30 pm, Monday through Friday, ensure somebody must listen to you.
- When calling Governor Pawlenty's office, please give your name and address.
- Explain you are a MAPE employee, and you are concerned the proposed furloughs will significantly harm Minnesotans who rely on the essential services provided by state workers. Twenty-four days without MAPE employees is twenty-four days without job-search assistance, food safety inspections, environmental protection and revenue collection.

Ask that the Governor stop working against state workers, and start working with us to reach a fair compromise on the contract and solve the state budget crisis. Also ask for a response.
