The short explanation of this alert was:

Monday, Nov 24th City Council passed the 2009-10 budget with significant new investments in helping Seattle residents meet their basic human needs.  Despite the reduced revenue picture, our elected officials created a budget that Invests in People First!

Thanks to your advocacy, the council protected and expanded food delivery services to low-income seniors, people living with chronic illnesses and disabilities. Among the council’s additions were these hunger-relief investments:

  • $400,000 for the delivery of meals to the ill and homebound by organizations like the Chicken Soup Brigade,
  • $400,000 for the support of food banks and bulk food purchases, and
  • $170,000 for outreach efforts to get more eligible Seattle residents signed up for food stamps (social services agencies estimate that only about half of those eligible are currently enrolled).

These were not easy investments, as the city had to also cut $19 million from their budget. The following elected officials worked hard to make sure the needs of our city’s food-insecure residents were met during these tough economic times:

  • Councilmember Richard Conlin (206) 684-8805
  • Councilmember Sally J. Clark (206) 684-8802
  • Councilmember Tim Burgess (206) 684-8806
  • Councilmember Jan Drago (206) 684-8801
  • Councilmember Jean Godden (206) 684-8807
  • Councilmember Tom Rasmussen (206) 684-8808

Please call their offices and let them know you appreciate their new investments in food banks and food delivery services! You can also email them by using our template below.

In a year when the economic recession required $19 million in cuts from a budget needed just to sustain 2008 activities, an increase in resources like this to help Seattle residents meet their basic human needs is a profound achievement for a community!

THANK YOU for being and ACTIVE ADVOCATE!
