The short explanation of this alert was:

The wild horses of Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests in Eastern Arizona have quietly lived on their ancestral home for centuries. In 2005, the United States Forest Service put out a plan to remove all of these magnificent horses and to turn them over to the Arizona Department of Agriculture to be sold at auction in Holbrook, Arizona, an auction house frequented by killer-buyers.

To prevent the removal of the horses from their ancestral lands, a lawsuit was filed by In Defense of Animals, the Animal Welfare Institute, the International Society for the Protection of Mustangs and Wild Burros, and Arizona residents including Dr. Patricia Haight. This suit led to a federal district court judge issuing a temporary restraining order and then a preliminary injunction preventing the Forest Service from removing the horses pending outcome of the suit.

On September 2, 2008 the Forest Service released a document entitled "Scoping Summary Heber Wild Horse Territory Environmental Assessment". This document has several alarming proposals and statements, including a plan for removal of “excess wild horses."

Please send your comments in support of the Apache-Sitgreaves Wild Horses and on this scoping document to the United State Forest Service by October 2, 2008.
