Time Management

And now for time management tips and resources!

Here’s a great list of articles and resources on time management from MindTools that includes everything from scheduling to beating procrastination and even creating prioritized to do lists.

If there’s anyone who knows about scheduling and to do lists, it’s probably the people who brought us Day-Timers! Check out this site (http://www.daytimer.com/Time-Management-Resources/home/0/False) for articles on getting organized – a key way to save time!

One of the biggest hurdles to effective time management is simply fighting distractions. You can reduce the distractions on your computer with these handy tools: Isolator for Macs and Dropcloth for PCs. These tools black out everything on your screen except the menu bar and the application you are currently working. Meanwhile, Lifehacker.com (http://lifehacker.com/), a website focused on getting things done, is a great resource and their article on Controlling your Workday is invaluable.

Not sure how much time you spend on distractions? Try one of these great time tracking tools, many of which are free or low-cost. For nonprofits looking for more of a staff-wide time tracking solution, visit Tech Soup’s Stock Products search list.

Just like nonprofit professionals wear many hats, so do their for-profit, small business counterparts. This library of informative articles from About.com (http://sbinfocanada.about.com/od/timemanagement/Time_Management.htm) includes numerous articles on delegation and even a humorous piece on time management types. Realtors – with their multiple appointments and clients – aren’t that different from your average professional nonprofit juggler either. Here’s a great article that includes such unique tips as reading your children articles from trade magazines as bedtime stories.

For managers in particular, we have Tom Gegax, author of By the Seat of Your Pants: The No-Nonsense Business Management Guide and his six D's: “don't do it, delay it, deflect it, delegate it, do it imperfectly and do it.” Learn more here.

The holidays are about managing your time, but they’re also about stress management. Here’s a great resource that groups them together and includes 10 tips for managing stress and 15 ideas on handling time management. Those looking for specific holiday time-management solutions should click here.
