Resources and Announcements

Hearing a lot about the financial sector meltdown and wondering what it means for you? We’ve found a few great resources that explain the situation clearly and concisely. Check out Nonprofit Quarterly’s The Cohen Report, “What the Financial Sector Meltdown Really Means for Nonprofits and Philanthropy” and NPR’s segment, “Assessing Impact Of Financial Crisis On Nonprofits.

And now, for election information!

First, if you’re attending CAN’s Annual Conference, be sure to check out the sessions dealing with lobbying and voting. On Thursday, October 23, at 10:45 a.m., Ken Larsen, CAN Director of Public Policy, will field questions from the audience in a Public Policy Town Hall. Ken will explain the nonprofit issues under debate in Sacramento and Washington. This is a great opportunity for nonprofit staff and leaders to be heard and be part of the discussion. During Thursday’s luncheon, Torie Osborn will address “Social & Economic Justice - What the Election Means to the Nonprofit Community.” And, during Concurrent Workshop 2E on Thursday afternoon, Erica L. Bernal-Martinez, Senior Director of Civic Engagement, NALEO Educational Fund will address “Civic Engagement for Nonprofit Organizations.” These sessions promise to be very interesting and informative!

As nonprofit organizations, educational institutions and religious organizations, including churches, are prohibited from participating or intervening in any political campaign on behalf of, or in opposition to, any candidate for public office. For more details on this ban – and to learn more about the do’s and don’ts, check out OMB Watch Election Resource Center. You can also find a helpful chart of acceptable and unacceptable activities from NCNA's President & CEO Tim Delaney here. And, don’t forget to check out a list of permissible activities as posted by Alliance for Justice.

For California-specific information, visit CAN’s Advocacy & Lobbying Staff Room. Please click here for an outline of your rights and prohibitions during candidate campaigns and here for an outline of guidelines governing nonprofits during elections. CAN members with further questions or concerns, can e-mail Ken Larsen, CAN’s Public Policy Director, or call him at (916) 402-1335.

“Change” is a rallying cry in the 2008 election. And California does need to make major policy changes to face growing and, in some cases, unprecedented challenges. The future effectiveness of these changes depends on the choices voters make now – both on the issues and on the candidates for California offices. What are incumbents and candidates offering that will address critical challenges in education, infrastructure, the environment, the state budget, and governance? The Public Policy Institute of California (PPIC), a nonpartisan, independent think tank, has recently published an accessible, to-the-point review of the big issues facing California and provides the information voters need to make informed choices about the future of their state. Check out PPIC’s “Today’s Choices, Tomorrows Changes” by clicking here.

Still looking for resources? Center for Lobbying in the Public Interest (CLPI) has a great “ask an expert” resource here. Nonprofits can also download a free copy of Make a Difference for Your Cause: Strategies for Nonprofit Engagement in Legislative Advocacy.

In California, the voter registration deadline isn’t until October 20th, so you (and your clients) can still register to vote! For California-specific voting information, such as registration forms in multiple languages and information about early and absentee voting, check out NonprofitVOTE, a one stop voter participation resource center for the 501(c)(3) sector.

And, you’ve seen this mentioned in the most recent Alert, but don’t forget that California’s Secretary of State is looking to nonprofits get out the vote in the upcoming election. Resource information is available here and nonprofits and other organizations are urged to add the MyVote Election Information button (available at http://www.sos.ca.gov/elections/bug/bug.html) to their websites.

Finally, being registered is a great start, but you also need to know who and what to vote for! Click here for the official California General Election Voter Guide. Voters can also find a free download of the nonpartisan Easy Voter Guide (available in 7 languages) from the League of Women Voters of California Education Fund.

To learn more about your local candidates and their views on nonprofits, visit the V3 Campaign. The Campaign seeks to make the voice of the nonprofit sector heard and their website has a helpful tool for contacting candidates directly to see how they feel about various nonprofit issues. As an added benefit, visitors can also see a candidate’s past replies.

For national candidates, see The Chronicle of Philanthropy’s Campaign 2008 Special Report. Visit this free section of the Chronicle’s site for comparisons between the two presidential candidates and for links to organizations tracking the candidates’ views on the arts, health and children’s issues.
