Member Benefits

CAN Insurance Services (CIS)

As a member of CAN, you have access to a full range of employee benefits coverage and general liability policies through CAN Insurance Services (CIS). CIS can help your nonprofit with all of your insurance needs including health, dental, disability, property and casualty, directors' & officers, workers' compensation (and more!) You’ll get help finding the best coverage at a reasonable price and tailored for your nonprofit. CIS’s dedicated staff of nonprofit insurance specialists can help answer your questions and provide you with the quotes and coverage you need to make the best decision for your organization.

Unlike other brokers, CIS is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the California Association of Nonprofits (CAN). This relationship requires CIS to put members’ needs first, above generating profits. CIS invests directly into growing and improving services by developing online access to policy information, providing regional education seminars on how to make the most of your insurance dollars, and printing resources to help keep you informed of the latest insurance trends, compliance issues and management strategies.

To take advantage of CIS’s insurance brokerage services, you must be a member of CAN. Click here to join! CAN members can call CIS directly at 1-888-427-5222.

And now, for fundraising resources and tips!

In terms of a general resource, the Free Management Library provides several great pages on fundraising. For a helpful chart of typical funding sources and their advantages and disadvantages, click here while a more comprehensive listing on fundraising and grant writing is available here. For short articles, but equally helpful, check out Fundraiser Help.

Looking for more in-depth information on a particular topic, but not sure where to start? The Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) offers a great online card catalogue of more than 3200 reference and periodical resources. Use the catalog to find books and articles of interest that can be checked out from your local library or requested through an interlibrary loan program.

With annual appeal letters right around the corner, now is the time to think about your strategy for these important letters. Some nonprofits have found unique strategies work best, such as comic strips (http://philanthropy.com/free/articles/v20/i12/12f00601.htm), the offer to buy a dinosaur bone (http://philanthropy.com/free/articles/v20/i12/12f00501.htm)

Looking to bring in corporate sponsorships for an upcoming event or simply want to know more about what’s involved? Idealist.com’s Development Center offers numerous resources on fundraising and marketing, including a great nine-step guide on corporate sponsorships, available here.

AFP also offers a great blog of fundraising news, including a listing of articles on unique fundraising efforts through out the world. Highlights include a record-breaking kazoo performance to collect food for a food bank in Oregon and a mud volleyball tournament to benefit the Epilepsy Foundation of Central Ohio.

For digital resources, The Grantsmanship Center podcasts can’t be beat. The Foundation Center also offers its proposal writing and budgeting short courses online and offers a proposal writing basics webinar every few weeks.

Speaking of digital – how are your online fundraising efforts going? Adding a “donate now” button to your website is a great start, but it is only the beginning. Check out The Online Fundraising Blog for more ideas and suggestions including free webinars. A recent article on online fundraising (http://www.nptimes.com/technobuzz/TB2008910_1.html) in The Nonprofit Times suggests that obtaining email addresses is the first step to online fundraising success.

Still struggling with your donations? Take comfort in the fact that you’re not alone. Even Senator Obama is struggling with his fundraising goals.
