Member Benefits

Partner with CAN Business Members

It takes so many skilled professionals to help run a successful nonprofit -- accountants, lawyers, fundraisers, IT professionals, management consultants and marketers – to just name a few. What you may not realize is that many people and companies with these valuable skill sets are already CAN members and their interest is in being of service to you.  CAN membership includes more than three hundred associate members -- individuals and for-profits who join to assist nonprofit groups. The CAN Classifieds -- our free online business directory -- found at www.canonprofits.org/resources/classifieds can lead you to the right professional expertise in finance, human resources, grantmaking, law, technology, management and education as well as more basic needs like office supplies and copying.

So for our associate members, be sure that your name and service is listed (it's free!), so CAN members can find you. For our nonprofit members, CAN membership demonstrates their dedication to serving nonprofit clients.  Don't hesitate to make the Classifieds part of your selection process any time you need outside help.

The Office of Management and Budget is consolidating and replacing four existing financial reporting forms (SF269, SF269A, SF272, and SF272A) with a single Federal Financial Report (FFR). The purpose of the FFR is to give recipients of grants and cooperative agreements a standard format for reporting the financial status of their grants and cooperative agreements (hereby referred to collectively as awards). Federal awarding agencies developed the FFR as part of their implementation of the Federal Financial Assistance Management Improvement Act of 1999 (Pub. L. 106107).

Copies of the proposed collection may be obtained by going to OMBs main Web page at

Back-to-school time

Back-to-school means back-to-school supplies. In a declining economy, however, getting those new supplies can be hard for cash-strapped families.

Individuals looking to donate new school supplies can bring them to a local Staples. The company is partnering with Do Something to encourage youth to help other students by donating school supplies through August 31st. Their site includes a list of the most needed supplies and a helpful location finder for the closest drop-off spot.

Many communities managed their school supplies drives in early August or even July, but Santa Cruz, Danville, and Monrovia and Pasadena are still collecting donations.

For those who want to be involved, but can’t quite make the August deadlines, World Vision provides a year-round school supplies donation program in the US.

Teachers need supplies too and this NEA blog includes a list of companies that are providing teacher discounts.

Among the treats? Office Depot’s Teacher Appreciation Week is this week, with a free breakfast on August 18th and school supplies goodie bags. Not a teacher? CAN members can take advantage of their CAN member discount at Office Depot online for low prices on school and office supplies.

Back to school doesn’t have to be limited to kids!

With summer coming to a close, numerous organizations are releasing their fall calendars for classes and educational programs.

Thanks for support from The James Irvine Foundation, The Foundation Center in San Francisco has recently released a copy of its Spanish-language Proposal Writing Guide. Also available: An impressive list of fall classes and events. For those who aren’t in the Bay Area, many of the Foundation Center beginner classes are available through free webinars.

The California Board of Equalization has also released its fall schedule of free seminars to discuss tax laws, exemptions, and reporting requirements for nonprofits. Upcoming locations include Huntington Beach, San Diego, Bakersfield and San Fernando Valley.

Executive Directors looking for specialized training can apply for the CEO-Link program hosted by the Nonprofit Resource Center in Sacramento. In Los Angeles, Executive Directors are urged to apply for the Executive Service Corps of Southern California third annual Wells Fargo Executive Directors Leadership Institute, which will kick off on Thursday, September 25. Click here for the brochure and click here to apply.

Not an executive director yet, or haven’t been one for long enough to qualify for these programs? The Executive Service Corps also offers new executive director training sessions and management development programs.

Of course, don’t forget CAN’s Annual Building Strong Nonprofits Conference on October 22 and 23. The early bird deadline of October 10 can save members and nonmembers alike $50. Click here to learn more and register.

A very complete list of nonprofit workshop providers statewide, including CompassPoint, Nonprofit Resource Center and Craig’s List Foundation is available here.

For those looking for something outside the nonprofit arena, One Day University offers a quick return to the college classroom through one-day seminars covering everything from “Positive Psychology and the Science of Happiness” to “Where Do We Come From? From Creation Myths to the Big Bang.” Upcoming sessions include September 14 in Los Angeles and September 20 in San Francisco.

If you’re like most nonprofit professionals, you’re probably still in student loan repayment. But good news may be just around the corner in terms of student loan forgiveness for public service work. Access a FAQ from the LA Times here and sign up for updates provided by the Project on Student Debt at http://www.ibrinfo.org/.
