New Program for Valley Nonprofit Organizations

San Fernando Valley nonprofits now have access to the new Valley Nonprofit Resources program. The website offers free or low-cost information, referral services, training workshops and technical assistance to nonprofits of all types.

Nonprofits may have cell phone liability issues

On July 1st, California’s law mandating hand-free cell phones will go into effect. Drivers will get a $20 ticket for a first-time offense of talking on their phones while driving. For subsequent offenses, the tickets increase to $50. Drivers under 18 are also prohibited from using any mobile device while driving.

Nonprofit employers who require employees to use their mobile phones while driving, or are not clear in their prohibition of the use of the phones (i.e. by distributing hands-free devices) may be held liable for costs associated with car accidents while the employee is working.

Poverty Resources

The unemployment rate just jumped to 5.5% nationwide (http://www.nytimes.com/2008/06/07/business/07jobs.html?hp) and approximately 1 in 11 mortgages (http://www.nytimes.com/2008/06/06/business/06mortgage.html) is facing problems. It looks like it’s about to be a long summer?

In the realm of foundations, politics and poverty, Spotlight on Poverty is a great resource for ideas and political viewpoints from various candidates. The site also includes state-by-state poverty data that nonprofits may find helpful for grant proposals. One Vote ’08 also provides a comparison feature where you can see what the remaining presidential candidates have to say about poverty.

Maintained by the Poverty and Growth Program (PGP) of the World Bank Institute focused on building capacity to reduce poverty. The blog is informative and the article on Eight Programs that Work summarized from The New York Times, is particularly interesting.

Looking for multimedia resources? National Public Radio has developed a series on Fighting Poverty in America that includes short articles and audio clips.

Looking for more in-depth materials? The Hunger, Homelessness and Poverty Taskforce of the Social Responsibilities Round Table of the American Library Association has numerous resources including statistics, articles and materials for children and families. The section on library resources for poor people features articles and suggestions that other nonprofits may find helpful.  In addition, Results has links to numerous anti-poverty resources and organizations.

For California specific resources, try HomeBase, California's public policy law firm on homelessness. Their site provides a PDF of resources and organizations in California.

A recent article in the CAN Alert mentions the decrease in government funding and resources for food banks, but the
USDA Community Food Security Initiative (CFSI) still has an online Resource Kit that serves as "as a one-stop shop" for assistance for community-centered food security activities.” Published a few years ago, the Guide is still a helpful resource for technical issues such as evaluation and marketing.
