And now for the Going Green Tips and Resources

The Sustainable Nonprofit by Sarah S. Brophy in the Philanthropy News Digest has a great three-part series about welcoming the green revolution into your museum or cultural institution, including tips for possible funding sources. Click here for access to all three columns.

We often direct you to TechSoup for technology resources, but here’s an article that’s less about technology and more about reducing environmental impact through green printing. It’s a must read for your communications staff.

The National Geographic Green Guide is also a great resource for nonprofits and their staffs. Green Guide tools include CO2 calculators for major appliances, eco quizzes and smart shopper cards for recycled paper products, food and cleaning supplies.

For Bay Area nonprofits, a recent article in Oakland Magazine by Jeff Swenerton offers 21 ways to be green, including a calculation of the cost and effort needed. Most of the tips are easy and free. For Southern California nonprofits, there’s no reason to feel left out: KTLA-TV provides a full library of interesting resources including tips and stories on going green.

Your local public works or recycling office can also provide tips on going green. Here’s a list from the Los Angeles Office of Public Works on tips for going green in various rooms of your home or office.

Flex Your Power is California's statewide energy efficiency marketing and outreach campaign. The site itself is full of tips for residential and commercial spaces, but the Rebates, Incentives and Services tool can’t be beat. Californians can type in their zip code and receive a list of financial incentives and rebates for everything from low-flow toilets to air conditioners. It’s also a central resource for identifying local resources such as energy audits and energy measurement tools.

And, with gas prices continuing to creep upwards, going green with your transportation has never been as appealing as it is now. Check out this article on greening your car in Grist Magazine. Equally helpful is this extensive list of 57 tips for going green and saving money in the process.
