Get Answers from the Presidential Candidates
In a little more than three months, either John McCain or Barack Obama will be our new president. As they ask for our support, don't they owe us clear answers about energy independence and their plans to invest in the emerging green economy?
Debate moderator Bob Schieffer of CBS News is compiling his questions this week. Send him an email and insist that these issues are prominently discussed in next Monday's debate.

Subject: A debate question suggestion
Dear [ Decision Maker ] ,
The presidential debate you are moderating next week is the final opportunity for many voters to hear the two candidates answer direct questions on the most important issues.
As you prepare for the debate, I strongly urge you to ask both candidates to address the issue of energy independence. Not just as an environmental policy matter, but as part of a broad strategy to grow the green job market and turn around our ailing economy.
Here are a few proposed questions:
* A generation ago, the Apollo space program laid the foundation for U.S. global leadership in science and technology. Would you support a similarly ambitious effort today, one that would invest in a green energy future while creating new jobs and re-invigorating our economy?
* America has been through a harrowing few weeks of economic uncertainty. In addition to restoring confidence in the financial markets, what role do you think energy independence should play in strengthening our economy? How much of an investment in renewable energy, clean cars and green technologies are you willing to make to restore American prosperity?
These issues go to the heart of our nation's current struggles. The potential is there to emerge from this crisis stronger than ever before - more powerful economically, less dependent on imported oil, more advanced technologically, better trained to fill the jobs of the 21st century.
A visionary leader could turn this moment into an opportunity. I think many Americans agree that Senators McCain and Obama must answer questions about these important issues.
